George Mathews

George Mathews was a police officer for 25 years, the last 23 with the Greenbelt Police Department, where he was a Patrol Officer, Crime Prevention/Community Relations Officer, Press Information Officer and a DARE Officer. George was recognized as Officer of the Year with the Hyattsville City Police Department in 1985; the Prince George’s County Community Services Officer of the Year in 2004 and was awarded the Sam Walker Lifetime Achievement Award as the Maryland State DARE Officer of the Year in 2007. After retiring from the Department in 2009, George was hired as the Youth Crime Prevention Specialist with the Maryland Community Crime Prevention Institute, the public outreach arm of the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions. In 2013 he returned home to the Greenbelt Police Department as their Community Relations/Media Liaison. George is married with two daughters, Hanna 17 and Taylor 18.
