Active Shooter

An active shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and other populated area. In most cases, active shooters use firearms and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims. Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly.

All employees can help prevent and prepare for potential active shooter situations. This course provides guidance to individuals, including managers and employees, so that they can prepare to respond to an active shooter situation. This course is not written for law enforcement officers but for non-law enforcement employees. The material may provide law enforcement officers information on recommended actions for non-law enforcement employees to take should they be confronted with an active shooter situation. The GSFC Protective Services Division will present a Case Overview on the Columbia Mall Shooting that took place in Columbia, Maryland in 2014.  Speaker:  Madison Townley

Automotive Safety – Let’s Review Our Driving Habits and Make Changes to Reduce Risk

The majority of us spend a significant percentage of time behind the wheel.  Driving takes concentration, coordination, and skill that we developed with time. Yet, many aspects of driving have become something that we do automatically. This can give us a false sense of security and subject us to making errors. Minimal loss of concentration from our task at hand as well as driver error can result in disastrous and life changing consequences. It makes sense to review our driving habits and make changes to reduce risk.     Speaker:  Ken Blumenstock
Target Audience:  All employees.

GSFC-Hearing Conservation

Noise is everywhere. It is the most pervasive environmental pollutant on the planet. Virtually everything we do makes noise, and the more we do it, the faster we do it, and the more of us there are,  the more noise that is made. Not only is noise present in our daily routines and recreational activities, the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders estimates that approximately 15 percent of Americans, or 26 million people, between the ages of 20 and 69 have high-frequency hearing loss due to exposure to noise at work or during leisure activities. Administration of a comprehensive and effective hearing conservation/hearing loss prevention program consists of more than merely purchasing and dispensing hearing protectors. Audiometric testing, education, training and program evaluation are but a few of the additional important aspects of an overall program. This course will review these elements and others in a practical and realistic manner, providing recommendations to ensure the protection of the worker and compliance with the law. National Fire Protection Association 70E

NFPA 70E compliance saves lives, reduces liability, and helps avoid unexpected downtime and revenue loss. Learn how the 2015 standard takes another big step in changing the way America works. In a fraction of a second, an electrical incident can claim lives and cause permanently disabling injuries. In fact, hundreds of deaths and thousands of burn injuries occur each year due to shock, electrocution, arc flash and arc blast - and most could be prevented through compliance with NFPA 70E: Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace. Originally developed at the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's request, NFPA 70E responds to the latest information about the effects of arc flash, arc blast and direct current hazards, as well as to recent developments in electrical design and personal protective equipment. Pet Safety: The Truth About Pet Food

Animal owners tend to treat their pets just like a member of the family. We take them to pet spas, drop them off at daycare so that they are not lonely, and feed them the best food and treats. But what happens when the “best commercial food” gets recalled and can no longer be trusted?
Unfortunately, pet food is not what it used to be.  Recalls of “well known & trusted” brands are being announced at an alarming rate.  Small companies that have been known for responsible manufacturing practices and ethical sourcing are being gobbled up by large companies only interested in their chunk of the multi-billion dollar pet food pie. Join animal advocate Krystal Kennedy as she breaks down the “special language” that is used throughout the pet food industry. Learn to spot and avoid ingredients on pet food labels that could potentially cause future health problems for your furry friends. Speaker: Krystal Kennedy

What Happens When You Have A Disease Doctors Can’t Diagnose Such As Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Five years ago, NASA Colleague Esteban Morales became progressively ill, after suffering a torn ACL in 2014, with myalgic encephalomyelitis, commonly known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). CFS is a debilitating illness that severely impairs normal activities and on bad days makes even the rustling of bed sheets unbearable. In this poignant talk, Esteban describes the obstacles he encountered in seeking treatment for his condition, whose root causes and physical effects the science or the medical fully don’t understand. He will discuss his journey on how mental, physical, and emotional stress left him bed bound for six months and house bound for three years to fully recovering. Presenter:  Esteban Morales
Target Audience:  All Employees

Writing Good Procedural Requirements

This course is intended to help writers and reviewers of Center directives understand what makes a good, well-written requirement, and also offers some advice for writing effective procedural documents.

The number of requirements (“shall” statements) in the GSFC Directives (GPDs, GPRs, and center-wide PGs) seems to keep growing.  Many are poorly written, they are not flowed-down in a consistent manner, and they are not organized in an understandable way.  This means it can be hard to figure out which procedural requirements apply to you, which are important, and which are not.

By following a handful of guiding principles and considering the costs, either intentional or unintentional, of each “shall” statement in our documents, the number of requirements can be reduced without impacting the quality of the work, and the clarity and completeness of the directives can be improved. Speaker: Dann Brown
