Wallops Safety and Mission Assurance Division (Code 390)

The Wallops Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) Division develops and implements NASA Safety and Mission Assurance policy for Wallops. This includes flight and ground safety for flight vehicles, occupational safety and health programs, lifting devices and equipment, pressures systems, quality and mission assurance for Wallops programs and projects. The above services are also provided to commercial customers as required. The Division Establishes GSFC policy and support for Range Safety and Explosive Safety programs and protects people and property from hazards associated with range operations across the entire spectrum of mission types and prevents unnecessary risk to mission and resources.

The Division executes systems safety and engineering analysis of flight vehicles; ground processing and facility safety systems; environmental conditions; and operational activities to identify risk and assure safety and flight worthiness. It establishes and reviews safety precautions for protection of the public, personnel, and the environment from hazards generated by operations. The division performs Flight Termination Systems analysis; certification, and testing; supports the GSFC Safety Committee, WFF Executive Safety Committee, and all sub‐committees under it; provides safety engineering and mission assurance support to WFF projects; safety engineering guidance to WFF support organizations; coordinates external safety training; and develops and provides internal safety training for all WFF personnel as required.
